Special Reading Initiatives

Several initiatives focused on reading are ongoing. These include:

  • Reading Areas in the Consultations of the National Board for Children (Des coins lecture dans les consultations de l’Office national de l’enfance)—A project that promotes the installation of reading areas in childcare centers
  • Read Us a Story (Lis-nous une histoire)—A program in which senior citizens read stories to children in preprimary schools
  • Opening My Daily Newspaper (Ouvrir mon quotidien) —A project that provides interested classes in Grades 5 and 6 with two daily French newspapers throughout the school year
  • Reading Makes You Happy (Au bonheur de lire) —One of several catalogs that lists high quality books
  • The Books for Younger Readers Fair (Salon du livre de jeunesse) —A book fair for children, teenagers, and their parents
  • The Reading Passion (La fureur de lire) —A program that organizes activities that promote reading (e.g., meetings with authors or illustrators, debates, performances by well-known actors, literary games)
  • The Bernard Versele and Farniente literary prizes—Juried competitions for children ages 3 to 12 and 13 to 16, respectively
  • The Committee for Permanent Monitoring of Adult Literacy—An organization that has coordinated and promoted literacy policies since 2005
  • The Bibliobus—A service that delivers books from public libraries to schools and community members via bus
  • Programme for Reading With 30 Recommended Actions—Launched in 2015 focusing on girls and boys up to 18 years old; its objective is to put reading back in the center of learning and educational and cultural practices by considering that reading is an essential skill in the development and in the self-fulfillment of individuals and the democratic society
