SMIRC participants

Twenty SMIRC participants from 11 countries and regions gathered in Seoul.

The Science and Mathematics Item Review Committee (SMIRC) met in Seoul, Korea, in May to conduct scale anchoring for TIMSS and TIMSS Advanced. In scale anchoring, SMIRC members also review student performance on the TIMSS and TIMSS Advanced achievement items to develop descriptions of the mathematics and science that students reaching the International Benchmarks know and can do.

Drs. Ina V.S. Mullis and Michael O. Martin, Executive Directors of the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center, thanked their hosts at the Ewha Womans University and Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation, as well as the rest of the committee for their hard work.

SMIRC members reviewed student performance on hundreds of mathematics and science items before writing descriptions of the International Benchmark levels, and selected example items to illustrate the skills students demonstrate at each of the international benchmarks.
