Monitoring Student Progress in Reading

National Assessments

Reading is assessed in the Primary School Leaving Examination and all levels of the General Certificate of Education.27 These assessments include listening comprehension, oral communication, grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing. Performance in the individual language components is not reported separately.

Monitoring Individual Student Progress

Schools assess students formally and informally. Starting in Grade 3, schools typically conduct at least two summative assessments per year—one at the end of each semester. For formative assessment, teachers adopt assessment methods such as oral presentations, written tests, and portfolios. Formative assessment allows teachers to monitor student progress, identify strengths and weaknesses, and provide meaningful and immediate feedback. Teachers can then adapt teaching methods and materials to meet students’ needs and abilities.

Schools monitor student progress and work closely with parents to support student learning. Parents are updated regularly through progress reports, personal calls, and parent‑teacher meetings.
