The TIMSS 2027 Assessment Frameworks publication is now available on the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center website
For over three decades, IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study has provided insights into mathematics and science education worldwide, enabling educators and policymakers to improve education outcomes. The frameworks provide the foundation for the instruments that comprise TIMSS 2027: assessments in mathematics and science achievement at the fourth and eighth grades, as well as contextual questionnaires that gather information about the environments in which students learn and specifications for the assessment design.
Chapters 1 and 2 of this publication present the Mathematics Framework and Science Framework. These chapters describe the content domains and topic areas covered by the assessments for each subject and grade level, as well as the cognitive domains of knowing, applying, and reasoning that represent the thinking skills students use to respond to the test questions. Chapter 3 provides the Contextual Framework, which is the basis for questionnaires capturing information about home, school, and classroom factors that are related to students’ learning. These questionnaires are completed by students, their parents/guardians, teachers, and school administrators. Chapter 4 provides an overview of the assessment design, including general parameters for item development.
