The third report in the TIMSS 2023 Insights series is now available from the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center

Intended, Implemented, and Attained Mathematics and Science Curricula at the Eighth Grade: Findings from TIMSS 2023 is the latest report in the TIMSS Insights series, now available from the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center. The report investigates the extent to which countries’ curricular specifications are implemented in classrooms, and how this relates to students’ achievement in the TIMSS mathematics and science content domains.

Curriculum serves as the academic foundation for students’ educational experiences. TIMSS gathers context data from national study leaders regarding the mathematics and science curricula intended to be taught in schools, as well as from teachers regarding the mathematics and science subjects taught to students. The TIMSS achievement instruments are designed to measure how well students have learned the content in countries’ mathematics and science curricula. This report illustrates how the content coverage in TIMSS reflects participating countries’ intended curricula, compares country- and teacher-level reports of curricula, and examines how these reports align with eighth-grade students’ achievement on the TIMSS assessment. The report results provide insight into the role topic coverage plays in students’ mathematics and science achievement and suggest fruitful areas for further exploration within individual countries that can inform policy and practice.
