Teachers, Teacher Education, and Professional Development

Teacher Education Specific to Mathematics and Science

Every teacher must complete at least a three year university or college course of study, comprising a bachelor’s degree, as well as a one year teaching practicum. Most teachers also complete a two year master’s degree course. Preschool teachers and teachers in Grades 1 to 3 must obtain a degree in preschool and elementary education, respectively. Teachers in Grades 4 to 6 and in lower secondary school must obtain a degree or a postgraduate diploma in their subject of specialization.

Requirements for Ongoing Professional Development

Polish teachers have ample opportunities for professional development. Universities offer postgraduate courses for teachers wanting to qualify to teach additional subjects, and every province has a public in-service education center. Commercial educational firms also offer shorter or longer courses. Although teachers are not obliged to attend, attendance on professional development courses counts toward promotion. Teachers are required to participate in workshops at school, devoted to issues such as formative assessment, personal development, cooperation with parents, and first aid
