Instruction for Mathematics and Science in Primary and Lower Secondary Grades

Grade at Which Specialist Teachers for Mathematics and Science are Introduced

Most Indonesian students are taught by subject specialists in mathematics and science beginning at the secondary school level in seventh grade. In general, primary school teachers (Grades 1 to 6) teach all subjects except religious studies and sports. In certain more exclusive private schools, subject specialists are introduced in the primary grades. Computer skills are taught formally beginning in seventh grade.

Instructional Materials, Equipment, and Laboratories

Textbooks must be approved by subject specialists under government regulation. According to the 2005 Ministry of Education Act Number 11, mathematics and science textbooks must be approved by the National Standard Board for Education. In addition to approved textbooks, other instructional materials are used to support learning and curriculum materials. In terms of school infrastructure, some schools are well resourced with essential learning equipment and laboratories.

Use of Technology

Some schools are well equipped with computer labs and multimedia centers, and mathematics and science teachers may incorporate technology into their lessons.
