Language and Literacy

Swedish is the main language in Sweden and therefore is spoken in all areas of society and taught in all schools. Students also have the opportunity to learn a foreign language and their mother tongue or minority language. The five official minority languages in Sweden are Sami, Finnish, Meänkieli, Romani Chib, and Yiddish.1 Other languages of significance include Arabic, Persian, Spanish, and languages of the former Yugoslavia. English is taught from early grades in school and is widespread in business and academia.
