Teachers, Teacher Education, and Professional Development

Teachers Education Specific to Reading

Before teachers begin working in schools in Kuwait, they generally must earn a bachelor’s degree in education from the Department of Education at the University of Kuwait or the College of Basic Education at the public authority for applied education and training. Prospective teachers take courses on professional preparation in teaching techniques and complete a supervised practicum for a full semester. Because of the need for Arabic language teachers, some teachers without professional qualifications in education are employed after obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Arabic language and literature from the University of Kuwait.

Requirements for Ongoing Professional Development in Reading for Teachers

All teachers in Kuwait go through a mandatory mentoring program, and there are additional professional development requirements for Arabic teachers. For example, the Ministry of Education offers a two week intensive development course on topics including the basics of curriculum and lesson preparation. Teachers with minimal education qualifications receive priority when enrolling in these courses.
