Language and Literacy

Russian is the official language of the Russian Federation as well as of Moscow, the capital of Russia. According to the Federal State Statistics Service, the population of Moscow is 12.33 million. According to the 2010 census, the percentage of the Moscow population that is Russian exceeds the average across Russia, totaling 91.65 percent among those who identified their nationality.1 Other nationalities and ethnic groups also live in Moscow. The language of instruction in educational institutions in Moscow is Russian. In some schools, the curriculum includes an ethnocultural component.
